In the modern-day society, blind and visually impaired people become more involved in activities which have been
unavailable to them for centuries. Science is not an exception.
The Second International Paradelphian Games of creative competitions for people with disabilities were held Izhevsk (Udmurtia, Russia) in November. They gathered more than 1500 participants from 20 countries who demonstrated their skills in several competitions including circus, theatre, music, choreography, and sign language singing.
Margarita Melnikova, a blind linguist and translator, created a web-based project "Describe It to Me" (http://xn----jtbhavgci6f.xn--p1ai/). Its purpose is to give the blind and visually impaired people an opportunity to understand what a certain object, image, or event look like. They can contact the project staff and send them an image (i.e. something found in the internet), video, etc., and volunteers will describe it. Besides, volunteers also send their description of interesting images or videos they have found themselves.
The second and last day of the Languages and the Media Conference will bring us a series of parallel sessions on many topics such as: platforms, training, immersive environments, dubbing, live subtitling, working practices, automation, etc. More information on the online programme https://www.languages-media.com/conference_programme_2018.php
