Abstract
The research presented here is descriptive in nature and aims to analyze the role of narratology in the creation of an audio description screenplay for a detective TV mini-series. Audio description (AD) is defined as a type of audiovisual translation that is intersemiotic in nature and provides an aid for the visually impaired to better comprehend an audiovisual programme. AD is normally derived from a pre-elaborated screenplay which can be prerecorded and edited into a programme or can be executed simultaneously during live performances. This study exclusively deals with the first part of the process, i.e. the creation of the screenplay. This thesis seeks to investigate how a descriptive analysis - based on Bal (1997), Balogh (2002), Fulton et al. (2005), Gomes (2004), Pallottini (1998) and Souza (2010) - of the narrative structure of the detective TV mini-series Luna Caliente (Globo, 1999) influences the discursive strategies of its AD screenplay. In order to do so, the translation strategies used to create two versions of the AD screenplay of the referred TV mini-series are described and analyzed. The first version was created by the researcher (PQV) and is based on the systematization of narratological-discursive parameters (Jímenez Hurtado et al., 2010), while the second version was created by another audio describer (CLV) and is based on some narrative aspects, which are however not systematically analyzed. The results show that in relation to the detective genre both screenplays were sensitive to aspects of the TV mini-series' composition, namely its construction of space and characters (mise-en-scene), focalization (cinematography) and anachronies (editing). However, it was observed that the PQV was more consistent and systematic than the CLV in the use of discursive strategies to re-create a number of elements relevant to the composition of the suspense of the scenes, such as the progress of the dramatic action of the scenes, the point of view and camera movement, the transitions between scenes, the editing rhythm, the distribution of elements in the frame, the lighting, the photography and special effects. In terms of narrative segmentation, due to Luna Caliente's televisual text construction, the comparative analysis revealed that each screenplay presented different discursive strategies. While CLV prioritized the acoustic content instead of the visual content, avoiding discursive repetitions, the PQV tried to create discursive strategies to translate the relevant repetitions of visual content throughout the narrative segmentations. This research demonstrates that the descriptive analysis of the narrative structure of the TV mini-series and the review of its AD screenplay based on narratological-discursive parameters were useful in producing a more consistent and systemized AD screenplay in relation to its own discursive structure (internal codes) and to the translation of the programme's visual aspects. The study suggests a systematic methodology to analyze a TV mini-series and to create its AD screenplay that can be applied to similar television genres.
