Abstract
Scientific audiovisual media has experienced an exponential development in terms of production and number of users, resulting in a huge growth of the demand of audiovisual translations. Amongst the many different methodological options, subtitling stands as one type of audiovisual translation which is more and more appreciated in the audiovisual field, as VOD platforms broadcasting programmes in original version with subtitles have consolidated a Spanish-native audience which is familiarised with this form of translation applied to scientific and research documentaries. The variety of audiovisual productions available to the audience makes the translator require a great range of competences and techniques. For the purpose of obtaining an effective and adequate target text – we must bear in mind that the translator deals with audiovisual texts based on orality and focused on diverse topics, which may be multidisciplinary and present different registers and levels of specialisation – the translator needs to apply a new methodology created specifically for this new market. This study aims to demonstrate the presence of specialised terminology in a selection of texts corresponding to different audiovisual genres within the scientific and research field, with the aim of evincing the necessity of a specific methodology for the translation of specialised audiovisual texts. This proves that we are dealing with a very complex project of audiovisual translation, where the translator has to combine different strategies in order to respect the characteristics of the style and register of the oral speech, as well as to apply the subtitling standards and to develop the competences required when working on a specialised and multidisciplinary translation.
