Abstract
A history of close captioning for deaf and hard of hearing in Spanish TV. With an introduction of its origins in the USA (1973) as open captions, the article presents the historical and technical facts for Spanish state channel TVE. Illustrated with many examples, it also presents a classification of subtitles by the genre of the programme where they appear: news, films, series, documentaries, competitions and humour.
