Simultaneous speech transcription and TV captions for the deaf

This paper is concerned with two related areas of research; one is the development of a portable speech transcription system for those whose hearing is impaired. A pilot study of the readability of the system’s output is reported. The second part of the paper deals with the application of this system within a television subtitling service and outlines some of the broader problems of subtitling television. An experiment comparing two styles of subtitle text is described.
