Transfer and construction of identity and culture in audiovisual feature film translation for the Italian deaf community

This chapter has outlined work in progress regarding access by the Italian Deaf and hard-of-hearing to international communication. Description has been given of the methodology utilized in the collection of a multimodal corpus of three American feature films, as well as the initial results of cursory comparative analysis between the source discourse and its translation in the form of subtitles. Some technical difficulties incurred during subtitling are discussed, such as temporal / spatial constraints and finding the closest translation equivalence.
