Abstract
At present, television companies tend to choose subtitles as the most effective approach to providing access to News programmes and this appears to reach most people with a hearing loss. However, for Deaf sign language users, the only solution would seem to be to translate the news into sign language. While the obvious use of interpreters is implemented in many countries, Deaf community members are almost totally opposed to this and prefer to have Deaf translators. However, introducing a Deaf presenter into the studio and then ensuring that the translation provided from text to sign is effective poses certain challenges. In this chapter, we consider the linguistic and presentational issues for Deaf translators in this particular mode of communication.
