Abstract
The emphasis is placed here on the techniques used to translate the conversational features of audiovisual dialogue. This is done by comparing the subtitled and voiced-over versions of two episodes of the popular series Desperate Housewives. The analysis shows significant differences when dealing with features of orality in these two AVT modes and reveals how translators take advantage of the multimodality of audiovisual texts in different ways. In line with the global approach taken in the present volume, this chapter establishes parallels with other AVT modes and contexts and argues that, despite being exclusive to Eastern Europe, the voiceover translation of fiction might also be of interest further afield.
