Abstract
This paper addresses the complex issue of cultural competence of the audiencein audiovisual translation, particularly in audio description. This article is based on aprevious descriptive study about the artistic referents present in Pedro Almodóvar's film La piel que habito(2011) and its audio description in Spanish. Given that the Spanish standard on audio description determines that it should help the blind or low vision viewer to see in the most similar way to what a normal person does(AENOR, 2005), we designed an online questionnaire of thirty-threequestions about thirteen artistic referents that appear in the film through images. From the analysis of the more than nineteenhundred responses of the participants, it can be inferred that the audio description script offers much more information than an average Spanish viewer who lacks the cultural knowledge offered by audio description. In these cases, the audio description seems to fulfill a didactic function through which the blind or low vision audiencereceive more accurate, more detailed and extensive information than a viewer who sees the images. Theyreceive, therefore, an extra help to understand the role that these artistic referents may have in the film.
