Abstract
YouTube channels offering open-access training materials are becoming more and more common. The videos on these channels remain an underexploited text type in audiovisual translation and language learning. This paper provides an overview of the YouTube channels available for learning medical English and analyses the types of subtitling used in these videos to enhance specialised vocabulary acquisition. The study corpus encompasses 31 videos from 10 different channels. The paper describes the supporting materials used in the videos, their content and structure, the activities suggested for users to improve their linguistic and communication skills and the subtitling options on offer. It then analyses a sample of 16 videos that employ television series as a didactic resource, reflecting on the way in which the series are introduced in the lessons, the use of automatic, traditional or creative subtitling and the reception of the videos by general and specialist audiences, i.e. medical students and professionals.
