Abstract
Subtitling the dialogues of a film is a typical contemporary exercise. In this way, the author summarizes some guidelines for the good practice of subtitling and he describes the task of the translator. The rest of the article is divided into two parts: selective translation and concise translation. These parts include topics as the phatic function where the many interlocutors establish a contact between them; the automatisms of sociability; other non-significant messages where the initiative of the interlocutor is evident; certain cognitive formulae; how the translator is pleased when he/she better squeezes the topic; the formulation of the message and the technical problems of expression; the translator ignores the dilatory formulae; the original message varies depending on the expression modulators; the subtitled version is too abstract; the translator could omit the second term of a comparison; the translator avoids reproducing the procedures of redoubling of the original dialogue; the translator will delete the superfluous elements from an enumeration, etc.
