Abstract
The present article deals with perspectivation strategies and linguistic devices used in the audio description of film, which is an intersemiotic and intermodal translation mode that renders visual information in a spoken form to benefit visually-impaired people. In particular, the study inquires how the filmic representation of a subjective, character-related perspective (typically, a point of view shot) is rendered verbally in audio description. The research material consists of two contemporary films, one German and one Finnish, with their respective audio descriptions, and the analysis centres on the linguistic matter in the audio descriptions. As a result, two sets of linguistic perspectivation strategies, as well as a variety of linguistic devices, could be defined. Rather than a concentration on interlingual differences as such, the analysis revealed general linguistic strategies. By comparing these different strategies, it is possible to show how they manifest a distinct degree of identification with the original representation of the character's perspective; the one relating more to the narrator's perspective and the other to that of the character.
