Abstract
The growing volume of audiovisual materials and the need to make them accessible to an increasingly global audience, together with the European legislative framework on accessibility, have generated an increased demand for accessible content. In this context, machine translation is one of the technologies that is being integrated more and more into the field of audiovisual translation (AVT): "Audio-visual content is thus becoming just the latest in a long line of commercial products whose markets can be expanded through machine translation" (Kenny 2022:33). Despite the benefits and opportunities this technology undoubtedly offers in AVT, doubts, problems and challenges have arisen around it, such as translation quality, and ethical issues to be taken into account regarding transparency of use, ownership, permission and distribution of data (Moorkens 2019). The following article sets out to present a retrospective of the use of technologies in the various AVT modalities and media accessibility, emphasising the use of machine translation and aspects related to human-computer interaction.
