Abstract
A further analysis of the affordances of subtitles for educational purposes. […] In this case, the emphasis is not placed on the learning of a foreign language but rather on the understanding of the filming whole and of the storyline in particular, through the reading of subtitles. By focusing on a specific group of viewers – pre-lingually deaf children – these researchers propose the use of simplified subtitles that would allow such viewers to enjoy the semiotic whole without imposing too much cognitive effort on their still weak reading skills.
